Was my Lai in Vietnam a massacre? At Fort Dearborn the Indians promised a peaceful retreat and the Americans were not attacking they were retreating. There was little that was "discriminate" about the Indian attack as they butchered 18 children and women and then tortured those that survived to death after negotiating that they would not harm the prisoners. I understand the desire to be politically correct but let's call it what it was, a massacre. And my Lai was a massacre. And many American attacks on Indians were also massacres. The lesson we should be teaching is that even in a war there are ethical boundaries and indiscriminate and gratuitous killing of civilians is out of bounds and deserves to be called a massacre. Nobody should be proud of Indian behavior at this massacre, with some exceptions (black partridge, etc)
