Viewing G.J. Echternkamp's 2007 video documentary about his pill-popping mother, Cynthia Brown, and alcoholic stepfather, Frank Garcia, is like watching a sushi chef slice raw flesh. But the spectacularly enabling couple are so hungry for attention they don't seem to mind the evisceration (much). Garcia had one hit during his stint with the 80s new-wave band OXO; for decades afterward Brown underwrote his fading career as both sank into cycles of substance abuse. Echternkamp makes his presence felt with quirky, poignant touches (in one sequence his hands fidget with a pen and a computer mouse in the foreground while his folks rehash old disputes). 73 min.
