Combining two storefront fads of the moment—burlesque and opera—Lingerie Lyrique has hit on a concept that's fresh, substantive, and sexy. Rose Freeman and veteran burlesque hand Red Hot Annie codirect this revue consisting of scenes from four vintage operas. Typical is the opening number—from Cendrillon, Jules Massenet's 1899 version of the Cinderella story—which turns into a sultry burlesque when the fairy godmother arrives, tossing glitter from her cleavage and singing in a vibrant soprano. There are rough edges to the show: the voices are young, and every light in the small house seems to be trained directly in the eyes of the audience members. But the attention to emotion and aesthetics is undeniably operatic—and more than a little fun. —Keith Griffith
