Forbidden to Forbid

This 2006 Brazilian feature adroitly blends romantic melodrama with social commentary as a love triangle plays out in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. A medical intern, accompanied by his roommate's girlfriend, drives to a desolate neighborhood as a favor to a terminal patient, hoping to locate her two sons. After arriving the travelers discover that one of the sons has been murdered by corrupt policemen and the other has gone into hiding. While tragic events loom, director Jorge Duran still fosters a sense of hope. In Portuguese with subtitles. 110 min.
