Forbidden Quest

Korean screenwriter Kim Dae-woo makes his directorial debut with this witty and inventive 18th-century fable about an aristocratic young court scholar tapped by a princess to investigate an art forgery. While hunting down the perpetrator he stumbles across an erotic manuscript that so inflames his imagination he begins anonymously issuing his own pornographic tomes; an unexpected hit with the public, they force him into a series of elaborate ruses to protect his identity and land him in the middle of some palace intrigue. Kim knows how to spin a good yarn, deftly juggling comedy, romance, bloody revenge fantasy, and pointed satire, and conveying them with an appropriately whimsical visual style. In Korean with subtitles. 142 min.
