If the Chicago City Council votes to repeal the foie gras ban such a vote would be a vote in favor of cruelty to animals ["When Activists Attack," by Mick Dumke, June 22]. Furthermore, the foie gras ban is not a universal laughingstock. Many luminaries including the Dalai Lama, Jane Goodall, Dick Gregory, Paul McCartney, and influential Israeli rabbis are vehemently against foie gras production. Ducks and geese are traumatized and tortured as a means to produce foie gras. The people that are opposed to foie gras may be for the birds but they are so for all the right reasons.
