Stephen Sondheim's landmark 1971 musical, about a group of aging vaudevillians reuniting to bid farewell to their soon-to-be-demolished theater, is seldom revived; its large ensemble of middle-aged and elderly characters is beyond the budgets and casting capabilities of most professional theaters. This production by the Actors Theatre Company is definitely an amateur effort, but the show's technical shortcomings are offset by the performers' guts and authenticity. The actors do justice to Sondheim's complex score, which brilliantly fuses the musical idioms of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s with playwright James Goldman's acerbic portrait of two former showgirls trapped in unhappy marriages. --Albert Williams
