The new Flying Lotus record, You’re Dead! (Warp), is a psychedelic parable about life after death that features guests as diverse as Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg, and Dethklok mastermind Brendon Small. It’s the most explicitly jazzy work so far by producer Steven Ellison, who records as FlyLo and as his rap alter ego, Captain Murphy, but it also dips into hip-hop—the single “Never Catch Me” showcases some of Kendrick Lamar’s tightest lines to date. Ellison’s frantic, impeccable production binds the album together, so that it plays like a 38-minute suite instead of a sequence of tracks. The record’s theme might have been part of why Pharrell Williams turned down Ellison’s invitation to appear on “Siren Song,” but You’re Dead! is hardly morbid. Ellison celebrates life while acknowledging the suffering that accompanies it, then lets his imagination run wild about what might happen to the soul once it quits the body. —Sasha Geffen
