Flume, Tokimonsta, Touch Sensitive, DJ Sin Label 18+ Agenda Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard

When: Wed., Sept. 4, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $19
As Flume, 21-year-old Australian producer Harley Streten grafts the supercharged sounds of modern EDM (flashy synths that sound like death rays powering up, concrete-splitting bass drops, minced and pitch-shifted vocal samples) onto smooth, luxurious R&B jams. On last year’s self-titled full-length debut for Mom + Pop, Streten deploys his aggressive synths tenderly, so that they wrap the songs like duvet covers while retaining their dance-floor energy; he processes sampled and original vocals (from a handful of guests) till they sound like some sort of clubland demons have possessed the singers. Some of the songs feel almost inhuman, but Streten can find the heart and sensuality in alien, robotic noises; over the hiccuping beat of “Stay Close,” he chops up and rearranges a vocal sample that’s been pitched up till it sounds like a chipmunk playing a trumpet, then combines it with a lower-pitched sample loop to create a melody that tugs at the heartstrings. —Leor Galil Tokimonsta and Touch Sensitive open.
