Hong Kong clown Stephen Chow applies his nonsense patter, gross one-liners, and manic slapstick to the legend of Tang Bohu, a Chinese scholar and painter of the early 17th century who leaves his eight selfish wives to track down his father's murderer but gets sidetracked by a beautiful maiden (Gong Li). The plot is barely serviceable, as Chow vaults from one antic to the next, and the film abandons its historical setting to spoof rap music and action painting. But the martial-arts acrobatics are dazzling and hilarious, with the great kung fu star Cheng Pei-pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) gleefully demolishing props. Lee Lik-chi directed; in Cantonese with subtitles. 100 min.
