Director Carlos Saura and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro deliver a 100-minute exhibition of flamenco dance, music, and singing almost entirely devoid of the qualities that make the idiom compelling. The location (possibly a soundstage) is icily neutral, the performances seem subordinate to the needs of the camera, and the sound track is preternaturally clean—the clacking of heels sounds dubbed. This 1995 catalog of performances by various artists may represent the historical development of a rich and enthralling art form, but it's presented in such a clinical way it might as well be a list on a chalkboard. In Spanish with subtitles.
