Carlos Saura's latest performance documentary is structured like a revue, with acts by musicians, singers, and dancers that celebrate flamenco culture. This was shot entirely on a soundstage, though Saura and his technicians do a remarkable job of re-creating dawn, dusk, and moonlight. Each performance seems to take place at a specific time of day—and because this was shot by the great Vittorio Storaro (Reds, The Last Emperor), the cinematography is just as impressive as the performances. Barring a few flashy camera movements, Saura focuses on the performers, so your enjoyment of this will depend on whether you can listen to flamenco for an hour and a half. The Spanish-language songs are unsubtitled.
