Dear editor,

Thank you very much for Linda Lutton's excellent article on the Bush tax refunds ("Congratulations! You Lose!" August 17)!

Too bad Illinois senator Fitzgerald also couldn't have understood (or did he?) how unfairly pro-rich the Bush tax cuts are. Thirteen times in May, Senator Fitzgerald faced amendments to reduce or delay the huge tax breaks for the rich. Each of these amendments would instead have favored another priority: a prescription drug benefit in medicare, protecting social security and medicare, assuring Head Start for every eligible child, or more tax relief for federal taxpayers who need it more than the rich.

On each of these 13 amendments, Senator Fitzgerald rejected these other priorities and voted to keep in full, and without more delay, the tax breaks for the richest.

Let's keep that record near our voter registration cards.
