Nicky Silver is famous for comedies that wrap sentimental whimsy in cutthroat jokes, and this 1996 effort is full of what's made him famous. The play centers on Arloc, a wealthy New Yorker whose dad died when he was 12, leaving him to grow up with Nessa, the nympho-narcissist mom from hell. Lonely, gay, and strange, Arloc falls for Boyd, a hunky chorus boy playing an angel in the Radio City Music Hall Christmas show. Falls for him so hard, in fact, that he takes Boyd hostage rather than run the risk of losing him. When Nessa walks in on the kidnapping, the results are grotesquely amoral but also kinda sweet. Fit to Be Tied could make for a cracked good evening if this Benevolent Theatre production were better. But director Sean Murphy can't get a handle on the motives that drive the characters' actions, which renders them arbitrary and silly rather than shocking and funny. —Tony Adler
