In NYC gang territory, Apache (Hank Hilbert) is down and out, collecting cans and protecting his turf; Speedy (Ivan Vega) wants out. By act two these childhood friends have switched roles—Apache's changed his circumstances, sort of, as Speedy returns, desperate and on the run. Director Juan Castañeda keeps these intense two hours moving, and playwright Cándido Tirado seems to understand the violence underlying friendship, which, as Oscar Wilde put it, can be more tragic than love (if only because it lasts longer). Playing their story out on a single set—a park bench—Hilbert and Vega move expertly from comedy to agony, taking on physical and emotional journeys that are, at times, difficult to witness. That seems to be Tirado's point: all lives matter, and our struggles and journeys to endure—whether it's in first class or on a traffic island—are what make us who we are, both heroic and deeply flawed. —Suzanne Scanlon
