Films by Yoko Ono, program two

Three films by the Japanese-born avant-gardist, made in collaboration with John Lennon. Apotheosis (1970, 18 min.), a simple but pleasant record in which the camera is carried by a balloon as it ascends into the clouds, caused a near riot of hoots and jeers when I saw it premiered at the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes—not so much because of the film, I suspect, but because Lennon and Ono were in the audience. I haven't seen the other two, both made in 1968: Two Virgins (19 min.), presumably made as a companion piece to their album of the same title, and Film No. 5 (Smile) (51 min.), featuring Lennon's face in slow motion, which sounds Warhol inspired.
