Films by Salla Tykka

Salla Tykka's competently made and sometimes moving art films have been widely shown at festivals. The loneliness of a woman spying on a man working out with a rope in Lasso (2000), the first episode of Tykka's “Cave Trilogy,” is palpable, as is the sense of threat in Zoo (2006), in which a woman reacts to a caged animal and to intercut shots of colliding underwater polo players. But the works don't go beyond the moods created by the content and the music, as if Tykka were ignorant of the rich history of cinematic expression, from Griffith to Mizoguchi to Brakhage. 100 min.
