When: Thursdays. Continues through Aug. 5 2010
Price: $8-$10
Every summer since 2002, the Neo-Futurists have worked to fill the void left by the demise of Mystery Science Theater 3000, digging up truly terrible film scripts and staging them live. Curated by Bilal Dardai and Megan Mercier, this year's roster kicks off July 1 with 1984's Supergirl, which made Helen Slater the star she is today. A cautionary Canadian rock-and-drugs parable, The Apple, follows on July 8. Then there's the vigilante classic Billy Jack on July 15 (local folkie Naomi Ashley performs a few numbers from the film live) and another drug parable, Brain Damage, on July 22. An intriguing entry from local comedy stalwart Joe Janes mashes up a 1957 babesploitation epic by Roger Corman with Peter Weiss's Marat/Sade, yielding what must surely be the longest title in Neo-Futurist history: The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent (as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Great Sea Serpent) Featuring Robot Vs. Dinosaur (July 29). All that, and My Little Pony: The Movie, too--the 1986 version--on August 5. At $8-$10 a pop, it's cheaper than a lot of this summer's actual celluloid crap. --Kerry Reid
