The young men of Filligar divide their time between the midwest and New England—they’re local boys, but three of them, the Mathias brothers, attend Dartmouth and a fourth goes to Hamilton. They generally appear to be squeaky-clean overachievers of the sort that reliably expose a rift in the indie-rock scene: some want to be them, some want to beat them up. And even though their teen-idol potential never really bore fruit (they’ve been playing since elementary school), the fact that they had any to begin with doesn’t help their case. It must be hard to be in a band like this now that college rock means “faceless alterna-crap” instead of “stuff that sounds like R.E.M. or the Pixies,” but Filligar’s third full-length, Near or Far (Three One Two), comes damn close to redeeming its fallen genre: the music is crisp, shimmering, and rich, and the fervent arpeggios and bold, starry-eyed romanticism of “The Willows” and “Nightfall” are hard to resist. Just wait till the boys all reach drinking age. —Monica Kendrick
