An 18-year-old girl who longs to leave her cloistered Hasidic community gets bound to it even tighter when her older sister dies and relatives pressure her to marry her brother-in-law. The mise-en-scene of this Israeli drama is appropriately suffocating: the camera rarely moves, the focus is often shallow, and there's little intimation of the world outside the frame. As a result none of the religious rituals feels particularly spiritual, and even the nominally happy ending fails to alleviate the oppressive tone. That the women suffer so politely makes the film even more despairing—this isn't about dashed hopes so much as lifelong resignation. Rama Burshtein directed her own script. In Hebrew with subtitles.
