Fielded, Gel Set, Alienists

Onetime Chicagoan Lindsay Powell, former vocalist for Ga’an, can hypnotize by doing very little. Many of the tracks she’s released as Fielded are so minimalist that the only thing holding the eerie synths together is Powell’s powerful, sometimes anguished voice, which she occasionally multitracks or pitch-shifts so that she sounds like the angel of death descending to earth to spend a couple hours at a darkwave night. On Fielded’s brand-new second album, Ninety Thirty Thirty (Captcha), she sometimes uses a fuller sound, which would work well to soundtrack a love scene in a bleak 80s sci-fi flick; in “Gabrielle” gently blooming horns sneak up on throbbing piano, and in “Eternal Hour” the chilly percussion creates engrossing patterns. However, Powell’s live setup remains simple and practical—she can still put you under a spell with just a laptop, some synths, and her unbelievable singing. —Leor Galil Gel Set and the Alienists open.
