Long on laughter and l'chaims, this David Bell production offers a charming interpretation of the Tony Award-winning 1964 musical. Ross Lehman bumbles endearingly as Tevye, the Jewish dairyman with more daughters than he can marry off. He and his wife turn to Yente the matchmaker to find husbands for their girls, but the three eldest sisters find love for themselves in the most unexpected corners of Anatevka, their small Russian shtetl. Through their mates--Motel the tailor, Perchik the revolutionary, and Fyedka the goy--Fiddler personifies the volatile climate of 1905 Russia and the intrusion of secularism and intermarriage into traditional Jewish culture. --Marissa Oberlander
