The first Festival of Cinema for the Deaf continues Friday through Monday, March 1 through 4, at Pipers Alley, City North 14, and Facets Multimedia Center, 1517 W. Fullerton. Some films are captioned; the other screenings will feature interpreters of both spoken English and American Sign Language. Unless otherwise noted, tickets are $5. Short videos, program one

Videos from England, Finland, and the U.S., including Antti Raike's The Silent World of 100 Db. 90 min. (Facets Multimedia Center, 6:00)

Videos from England, New Zealand, and the U.S., including David Pierce's Portrait of a Deaf Irish-American, Terrence James O'Rourke. 90 min. (Facets Multimedia Center, 7:30)

Short films, program one

Films from the UK and the U.S., including The Ride by John Flanders. 90 min. (Facets Multimedia Center, 9:00)

Films by Charles Krauel

Work by Chicagoan Charles Krauel, who began documenting the deaf community on film in 1925 and continued for half a century. 90 min. Admission is free. (Facets Multimedia Center, 10:30)

SATURDAY, MARCH 2

It's a Family Affair

A captioned print of Monsters, Inc. (see capsule in regular listings), showing with A Shadow's Resolve by David Pierce and an animated short to be created by children during the festival. (City North 14, 2:00)

A Beautiful Mind

A captioned print of Ron Howard's current feature, profiling mathematician John Nash (see capsule in regular listings). (City North 14, 4:00)

Breaking the Silence

A single mother (Gong Li) struggles to raise a deaf son in contemporary China; Zhou Sun directed this 1999 feature, in Mandarin with subtitles. 90 min. (City North 14, 7:00)

MONDAY, MARCH 4

Monsters, Inc.

A captioned print of the 2001 animated feature (see capsule in regular listings). Free admission to children under 12. (Pipers Alley, 10:00 am)
