Fat White Family, Sun Club

When: Tue., May 5, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $14
On their debut full-length, last year’s Champagne Holocaust (Fat Possum), London-based scum-rock outfit Fat White Family weave together a patchwork of country-flavored punk, indie pop, and noise rock. On the raw recording—which shifts unpredictably between loose-limbered ragers and fractured bedroom antisongs—the five-piece filters an offbeat sense of melody through the twisted scope of the Country Teasers and the damaged minimalism of Jim Shepard. The record is great—new highlights creep out of the sludge with each spin—but a live setting is where Fat White Family shines: the five ragged dudes thrash about the stage and pump up the album’s occasionally skeletal tracks with so much energy and attitude that they almost become hard to recognize. The band still has a lot of hype to live up to, but if they keep attacking the stage with unrelenting, beer-soaked fury and reckless abandon, they’ll be just fine. —Luca Cimarusti
