According to his program bio, Steve Patterson has written "over 50 plays." I don’t know where this 75-minute piece stands in that prodigious oeuvre--Shakespeare managed only 37--but I hope it's early, because Farmhouse is much more impressive as evidence of developing talent than as a work of artistic maturity. Patterson's got some nice writing, well-structured scenes, and hints of wit here, but he also strains some earnest metaphors to the point of silliness. And the script as a whole explores the sort of sci-fi conceit--Am I the dreamer or the dream?--that appeals mainly to pedantic adolescents, the seriously dissociated, and M. Night Shyamalan. Still, Adam McDowell's barebones production is remarkably convincing, considering, and so are Matt Allis and Calvin Hinson as the two manifestations of Patterson's weirded-out, war-traumatized hero. --Tony Adler
