Whales fly, New York City comes to life, a vast forest grows and dies. But I wasn't impressed until Mickey commanded an army of water-bearing brooms—the one segment repeated from the 1940 Fantasia. The rest of these animated sequences—set to music by Beethoven, Respighi, Gershwin, Shostakovich, Saint-Saens, Elgar, and Stravinsky—depend on gimmickry, cuteness, or facile ideology, and don't come close to demonstrating the complex relationship between sound and image found in “The Sorcerer's Apprentice.” With James Levine conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. 75 min.
