Fall Out Boy began their life as insufferable regulars on the midwestern hardcore circuit, but they got way easier to enjoy once they stopped caring about punk cred and started earnestly pursuing pop success—in the mainstream, their unabashed corniness wasn’t the liability it’d been at the Fireside Bowl. By the time Fall Out Boy went on hiatus in late 2009, they’d evolved into an efficient machine for producing massively hooky, highly polished anthems indebted less to punk than to MTV-era arena rock and contemporary pop. Their performance at this year’s Riot Fest was a potent reminder of how many unforgettably catchy songs they’ve made—I’ve never owned a Fall Out Boy album, and I could still sing along to half their set. Earlier this year they ended their break and returned to the top of the pop charts with the cheekily titled Save Rock and Roll (Island), whose hard-to-shake single “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)” sounds like a Bon Jovi number careening head-on into a Diplo track. —Miles Raymer
