Fake Limbs, Blizzard Babies, Den

When: Sat., Dec. 27, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $10
Unless Fake Limbs suddenly shift subgenres, their unhinged noise-rock sound will forever be compared to the Jesus Lizard. It’s fine. It’s OK. The four members hammer out a jagged clatter not unlike what might be produced by a wheelbarrow full of battle axes and fine porcelain china being dumped off a cliff—and, you know, they’re from Chicago, the battered and bruised former stomping ground of Yow & friends. Still, there are plenty of worse yahoos to be compared to than the four that composed one of the best bands ever. On The Power of Patrician Upbringing, the Fake Limbs full-length released last year by local label BLVD Records, the husky vocals of front man Stephen Sowley waver between raving lunatic and babbling schizophrenic (the difference is in the tone of crazy), and the guitar noise is more of a gash than a chord (try “Hairwrecker” on for size). Not all wild-eyed noise rock, their sound often recalls an early-aughts hardcore vibe, one that’s more about confrontation than writhing around on the floor naked. Tonight’s set is part of the BLVD Records Holiday Bash. —Kevin Warwick
