A young Chinese-American woman (Bai Ling) abandons her unwanted daughter to the care of her rigid mother in Queens, then turns up nearly 20 years later to absorb the recriminations of the huffy, eye-rolling girl (Kristy Wu). Like Alice Wu's Saving Face and Mina Shum's Long Life, Happiness & Prosperity, this debut feature by Columbia University grad Bertha Bay Sa-Pan deals with the tension between Asian-American mothers and daughters as old-world traditions are overrun by modern culture. But with its one-dimensional characters and artless dialogue, it seems more like a cable-TV soaper. PG-13, 89 min.
