Extra Golden, Icy Demons | Empty Bottle | Rock, Pop, Etc | Chicago Reader

On its first two albums this scrappy American-Kenyan combo tried valiantly and a little self-consciously to combine indie rock and the guitar-based dance music called benga, with mixed results—Extra Golden had grown out of friendships that guitarist Ian Eagleson developed while in Kenya researching benga for his dissertation, and sometimes it sounded like he and Alex Minoff, the other American in the group, were still studying the music rather than simply playing it. But on the new Thank You Very Quickly (Thrill Jockey), recorded after three months of touring last summer, Extra Golden sound like a proper band, able to trust the electric chemistry they’ve developed onstage instead of overthinking every move. Previous records tended to alternate benga tunes and rock-funk numbers, but the songs on Thank You Very Quickly are granite-hard composites that combine the best parts of each—benga’s fluid, bubbly guitar and the in-the-pocket punch of rock and funk.
