100 minutes · 2013
This British head-scratcher marks the acting debuts of punk musician Viv Albertine (of the 70s band the Slits) and conceptual artist Liam Gillick; they play a childless, long-married couple whose strongest bond is a shared psychological attachment to their modernist London apartment. Writer-director Joanna Hogg deliberately obscures crucial information about these characters—like what they're always working on around the apartment or why they're trying to sell the place if they love it so much—while demonstrating a rigorous control over sound design, framing, and performance style. Her approach recalls that of numerous European art filmmakers (particularly Chantal Akerman and Michael Haneke), yet this develops a distinctive air of mystery as it progresses, as well as a wry sense of humor.
