Action/Adventure, Animation
The Japanese franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion—which includes a long-running manga, a 1995 anime series, and a 1997 big-screen spinoff—gets a reboot with this 2007 theatrical feature, the first in a projected series of four. Earth is recovering from a cataclysmic event known as the Second Impact, and now Tokyo is under attack by giant beings bent on eradicating mankind; the city’s only hope is a team of teenage pilots young enough to meld with, and thus steer, a pair of cybernetic fighting machines. Written and directed by Hideaki Anno, who created the original series and feature, this is overwhelmingly bleak: human warmth is in short supply, and the Christian iconography conveys terror more than salvation.
