Evan Dando

When: Thu., Feb. 5, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $15
Since the late 80s, Boston’s Evan Dando has worn plenty of hats: he was an angsty teen who fronted the Husker Du-worshipping early version of the Lemonheads; he was a long-haired alt-rock heartthrob who graced the pages of People’s 1993 Most Beautiful Issue; and he was a former icon in the midst of a midlife crisis, raging away (backed by Karl Alvarez and Bill Stevenson of the Descendents) as he closed in on 40. But never mind Dando’s checkered past; his insane sense of melody has always made him stand out. Put him onstage with just an acoustic guitar—and without the punky sensibilities of the Lemonheads—and he’s at his best. Last summer I caught him and the re-formed band, and awkward as it was to see him supported by a ragtag group of hired guns who probably weren’t even born before It’s a Shame About Ray was released, he’s still got that smooth voice and those massive hooks—and that’s what really matters. Dando performs solo tonight. —Luca Cimarusti
