Eternal Thirst

Revived in France in the mid-1980s, this 1957 melodrama by Indian filmmaker Guru Dutt placed high on Cahiers du cinema's ten-best list. Dutt stars as a brilliant but unrecognized poet; his family, scornful of his work, allows his manuscripts to fall into the hands of a prostitute (Waheeda Rehman). When she is told that the poet has killed himself, she spends her life savings to have his work published.
