Two things set Estelle’s “American Boy” apart from the seven previous recipients of the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. For one, Estelle’s the first British winner, but more interestingly her song—unlike “Umbrella,” “Yeah!,” “My Love,” and the others—wasn’t an immediate and inescapable smash that saturated all sorts of radio markets for months at a time. In fact the single dropped last April and didn’t peak on the charts till September, despite its guest verse from Kanye, its cute and accessible lyrical theme (Estelle wants to find a dude to squire her around our fine nation), and its broad hooks (for which producer can be credited with an assist). Hopefully the Grammy will inspire more Americans to give a second look to Estelle’s sophomore album, Shine (Atlantic), where plenty more satisfying pop R & B awaits. Solange opens. —Miles Raymer
