Although dated by its Age-of-Aquarius glorification of nonconformity and sexuality, Peter Shaffer's Tony-winning 1973 drama remains powerful thanks to the open-ended meaning of its central situation: a child-man's ritualized obsession with horses. Wayne Shaw's staging for Ludicrous Theatre foregrounds the play's homoeroticism in several charged nude scenes. Many cast members do fine jobs, but Ian McCabe makes an impressive Chicago debut as Alan, capturing the young, largely nonverbal mental patient’s anger, need, and defensiveness in flickering facial expressions and expressive, often explosive physicality. By contrast Kevin Heller seems physically imploded in the crucial role of the brilliant, troubled psychiatrist, Martin Dysart. His measured cadences never convey the character's underlying passion, the reason he's drawn to his deeply disturbed charge. --Laura Molzahn
