Enslaved was born in 1991, during the notoriously tumultuous and scandal-plagued second wave of Norwegian black metal, and its founding members got started at a tender age—guitarist and vocalist Ivar Bjørnson was just 13. Yet for all that they’ve had a stable and solid career, and I’d say they seem downright sane if I didn’t think they might take it as an insult. Their 12th full-length, Riitiir (Nuclear Blast), is very full-length indeed. Well over an hour long, with most songs at or past the eight-minute mark, it’s absolutely packed with serious black/progressive metal: heavy riffing, blastbeats, sweet instrumental interludes, even an actually scary whiff of Mellotron. And just when you think you’ve survived the howling barbarian onslaught and the worst of the violence is over, a cold blade of clean singing stabs you in the back. It’s more accessible than Enslaved’s earlier records, which of course has provoked protests from a certain class of fans, but I find myself accessing it often. —Monica Kendrick Pallbearer, Royal Thunder, and Ancient Wisdom open.
