Encounters: Experimental Film and Video From Croatia

Alexander Stewart, a programmer for the Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation, curated this shorts program surveying the last 50 years of Croatian avant-garde cinema. Most of the selections combine animation and live-action filmmaking: For Encounters (1961), director Vladimir Petek applies drawn-on-film animation to black-and-white screen tests of a young woman; and for Market (2006) director Ana Husman uses stop-motion animation to suggest that fruits and vegetables are boiling and canning themselves. The program also contains several experiments with early video from the mid-70s through the early 80s that play with the possibilities of layered imagery.
