In this adaptation of Elizabeth von Arnim's 1922 novel, two Hampstead housewives, a flapper, and a crusty dowager rent a castle in Italy, leaving behind dreary old England for a month of sunshine and wisteria in paradise. Naturally, it's not long before each of them has gotten her groove back. In addition to containing few surprises, Matthew Barber's polite script only hints at the profound dissatisfaction plaguing the women, who consequently come across as dull and listless. In Evan Jackson's staging for Idle Muse Theatre Company, Maggie Speer has a good time playing the Lady Bracknell-like dowager—she gets all the good lines. But without a palpable sense of longing, everything else feels stuffy and remote, like a Merchant Ivory production without the budget. —Zac Thompson
