Emanuel Ax & Anne Sofie Von Otter

When: Wed., Jan. 29, 3 p.m. 2014
Price: $21-$87
Tonight masterful pianist Emanuel Ax kicks off the Chicago dates for his intriguing Brahms Project, a traveling three-part series that pairs music by Brahms with new commissions of modern work. The concerts are part of the Symphony Center Presents Chamber Music series, and for this one Ax is joined by authoritative mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie Von Otter; for the second he’ll duet with cellist Yo-Yo Ma in February, and the third is a solo recital in May. Tonight’s program includes commissions from Nico Muhly (“So Many Things”) and Missy Mazzoli (“Bolts of Loving Thunder”), two of New York’s most exciting and open-minded composers—I’m very keen to hear how these pieces sit alongside Brahms. —Peter Margasak
