Motherhood seems to have been good for Eleni Mandell. A few years ago she ended a relationship because her partner wasn’t interested in having kids; she ended up with a sperm donor and twins. Her new album, Let’s Fly a Kite (Yep Roc), is the breeziest, sweetest work she’s ever produced, an unabashedly retro-sounding record that brings a sly postmodern twist to 50s pop. She recorded it in London with producer Neil Brockbank, who put together a terrific band that included players who often work behind Nick Lowe. The opening track, “Put My Baby to Bed,” is a love letter to a child that does a clever double duty to address adult longing, and “Wedding Ring” suggests without bitterness that Mandell is no longer losing sleep about finding the perfect partner. —Peter Margasak Vikesh Kapoor opens.
