Elder, Mos Generator, Of Wolves, Bloodletter

Prog and metal were born together in that instant when Robert Plant shoved a sock down his drawers and spasmodically shrieked like a Nazgûl. Elder keep that swaggering nerd worship alive on Lore (Armageddon Shop), their first full-length in four years (not counting the Live at Roadburn album from 2013). Their spiky, noise-rock channels fellow Providence, Rhode Island, gods Lightning Bolt, though Elder leaven their relentless assault with doomy head nodding as opposed to ramped-up tempos. Whatever the genre influences, though, it’s clear that the main goal here is to create some badass music by which to roll up player characters and carve out hit points. Song titles like “Legend” and “Lore” are references to one of the original D&D tomes, and the ten-minute-long “Compendium” shamelessly cops a riff from “Immigrant Song” before heroically journeying off a la Rush or King Crimson. Bloated, preposterous, and completely aware of their own awesomeness, Elder conduct a joyful exercise in fantastical math-rock. They’re wound as improbably tight live as they are on records, so the concert should be a welcome chance to raise a lighter as Mordor’s Cyclopean towers fall. —Noah Berlatsky
