El Stories | Greenhouse Theater Center | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Aug. 13 2011
Price: $13
The 12-member Waltzing Mechanics ensemble perform with irresistible charm, subtlety, and candor. And their project of staging the transcribed tales of everyday el riders would make Studs Terkel proud. But what they offer here are mostly el snippets, not stories. A man stands up in the middle of an el car, shadowboxes, and sits back down. A guy wears a kilt just to draw stares. Drunks break into a line dance. Practically every segment consists of people doing unusual things without consequence or payoff. Worse, certain groups are consistently marginalized as suspect Others—namely the homeless, the mentally ill, the unconventionally dressed, and those who appear to be from the hood. —Justin Hayford
