Ed Motta's tour has been postponed. Brazilian polymath Ed Motta, nephew of the great soul singer Tim Maia, is first and foremost a music obsessive, a collector who owns more than 30,000 albums. Enthusiasm for past styles, both from his homeland and from the U.S., has always shaped his output as an artist, which has seamlessly blended bossa-jazz, 70s soul, samba, funk, and vintage film scores. In recent years he’s fallen in love with slick 70s pop-rock, an adoration that reached its apex to date on last year’s AOR (Dwitza), recorded in English- and Portuguese-language versions. The title refers to the radio format “album-oriented rock,” and the savvy Motta does slick jazz-informed pop (often called “yacht rock” these days) as well as its original practitioners—he’s got a particular affinity for Steely Dan and Christopher Cross. This is his Chicago debut. Opening act Barbara Eugenia also plays at Sabor a Cafe on Fri 8/1 and at Elbo Room on Sun 8/3. —Peter Margasak
