Kristi McKay sent a questionnaire to 100 women, asking for stories encapsulating their relationships to food. The responses are part of this play, in which six friends gather to eat cake and mourn a recently deceased friend who occasionally materializes to speak from beyond the grave. McKay has collected some powerful material, highlighted in a string of emotionally unguarded monologues that comprise the bulk of her second act. But she hasn't found a credible way to connect the monologues to her perfunctory dramatic premise. The characters come across largely as mouthpieces, shoehorned together for convenience. With the strong actors she's got, maybe the monologues are all she needs. --Justin Hayford
