Easy Money

Based on a best-selling Swedish crime novel, this 2010 thriller tells the story of a bright economics student from a poor family (Joel Kinnaman) who poses as wealthy to impress his affluent friends. To fund his extravagant lifestyle he runs errands for a local dope peddler, but he gets himself in too deep after helping orchestrate an international drug deal that attracts the attention of the Serbian mafia. Like the HBO drama The Wire, the movie casts a wide net over a diverse criminal culture, depicting it as a virtual melting pot of different races, languages, and customs. But the story is overcooked and the gritty aesthetic (handheld cameras, desaturated color) borders on cliche. Daniel Espinosa directed. Subtitled.
