Bar Details

There are already plenty of places to grab a drink along the stretch of Milwaukee between California and Fullerton; adding another bar to the area is unnecessary at best. But if another joint had to open here, I'm glad it's one as casually chic and inviting as East Room. The spacious second-floor speakeasy opened in February and it's got a clean, bold interior with plenty of exposed brick and walls covered in black and red, with the occasional piece of tasteful artwork (there's also a patio). The staff's friendly and quick to point out what top-of-the-line drinks from the bar's beer list are available. There are lots of wooden benches and little corners to sit and comfortably listen to, say, the Marked Men's Fix My Brain. Plus there's a separate room with a DJ setup for whenever local musicians, like outre-pop producers Supreme Cuts or leaned-out rapper Kit, come to spin. Aside from a projector in a corridor near the back screening graphic clips from horror movies and what might be amateur porn, the biggest drawback has little to do with the bar itself and everything to do with the building’s recent history—it housed a mental-health facility that was forced to close a couple years ago due to budget cuts. And I can't help but think how much the neighborhood could use that resource instead of another pub. —Leor Galil
