Director John Loos and company get laughs by playing it straight with a ridiculous premise. The plot (generous term) of this disaster-flick parody follows a rogue scientist's efforts to save humanity as Mother Earth gets ready to unleash an apocalyptic queef of noxious gas. This requires staving off a sinister general's plan to penetrate the Midwest with the state of Florida and persuading the president to lubricate the affected region instead. A live dog and a picture of Joan Collins riding a quiche somehow find their way into the proceedings. Bits are random and juvenile about as often as they're witty, but Loos's gifted ensemble is always comedically sound and makes the material's faults easy to overlook. --Dan Jakes
