This veteran Chicago hip-hop duo’s 2008 album, Elements: Fire (All Natural Inc.), is the first in a projected series of releases patterned after the four classical elements—each will have a different vibe, and appropriately enough Fire has what the group’s PR calls an “aggressive boom-bap sound.” All Natural are staunchly old-school, and their tracks remain lean, taut, and free of interpolated pop hooks—just beats and words. MC Capital D has toughened up his rhymes to match the album’s mood, relaxing the self-imposed strictures he embraced upon his conversion to Islam; though he’s still somewhat restrained about swearing and boasting, on a battle rhyme like “Backslap” he doesn’t pull any punches. The way commercial hip-hop has evolved in the past few years means Cap D and DJ Tone B. Nimble no longer have any realistic hope of breaking out of the underground (at least not making music like this), but even though they’ve stuck with a style that’s no longer the thing they don’t sound a bit stale or irrelevant. Earatik Statik headline; Juice, All Natural, Diverse, and DJs Rude, 3rd Rail, and Monky open. —Peter Margasak
