Dysrhythmia, Zevious, Guzzlemug

When: Wed., Nov. 13, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $8
Instrumental New York combo Zevious started out in the late aughts as a relatively conventional jazz guitar trio, but it’s gravitated toward a punishing, precise sound with a slippery, vaguely sinister vibe. On the three-piece’s recent third album, Passing Through the Wall (Cuneiform), drummer Jeff Eber and bassist Johnny DeBlase stomp, slalom, and stutter, shuttling their huge rhythms and complex grooves through different time signatures as effortlessly as most folks draw breath—this is definitely an example of what Weasel Walter used to call “brutal prog.” Guitarist Mike Eber slithers and glides with eel-like agility, moving between clean-toned resonance and blown-out distortion as he alternates single-string shapes and flurries of gnarled chords. There’s not a lot of air in Zevious’s muscular, frenetic sound, but neither is there any fat. —Peter Margasak Dysrhythmia headlines; Zevious and Guzzlemug open.
